Multi-Source Mesh: One complete model, inside and out

Multi-source Mesh – a new chapter for 3Dsurvey

For the first time in 3Dsurvey, you can combine drone photogrammetry with SLAM or Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) data and calculate a single, unified mesh.

One mesh can represent both the exterior and interior of an object or structure, combining the strengths of different reality-capture technologies in one workflow.

Surveyors rarely rely on a single sensor anymore. Drones are the fastest way to capture roofs, façades and the surrounding terrain. SLAM and laser scanners get you inside: corridors, stairwells, dark cellars and tight spaces where a drone can’t fly and photogrammetry struggles. Until now, these datasets could be brought together as point clouds, but the final 3D model still had to be stitched together from separate pieces. With 3Dsurvey 4.2, the combined data becomes one continuous mesh.

The benefits don’t stop at the front door. Scanner data also improves the exterior. Areas that are hard to capture from the air become sharper and more complete in the final mesh, including:

  • ground-level details
  • spaces under roof
  • overhangs and balconies
  • narrow passages between buildings
  • surfaces hidden behind vegetation

Multi-source meshing also works with a single scanner source. For the first time, you can create a mesh from SLAM data alone or from laser scanner data alone, with no drone imagery required.

The multi-source mesh is available with the Scan module.

In this webinar, we’ll walk through the complete multi-source workflow, from field capture to a finished mesh.

Using a real-world project, we’ll show the strengths each technology brings and how they complement each other in the result.
