Editing layers in CAD for better categorization
Welcome to 3Dsurvey tutorials.
In this video, we’ll be showing you how to edit layers found under CAD functions. Layers are used for better categorizing different elements, such as roads, buildings, and construction sites. You can manage layers efficiently by using the tools in the layers menu located on the right side of the screen.

Adding a New Layer
To add a new layer, click the plus (+) sign in the top-right corner, just above the list of layers. A new layer will be created, ready for customization.
Layer Column Functions
At the top of the layer list, you’ll notice a few key columns represented by letters. Here’s what they mean:
S (Selected Layer)
The “S” column determines the active layer where drawing or editing will take place. You can select a layer by clicking its icon. The selected layer will have its name highlighted more prominently. Note that only one layer can be selected at a time.V (Visible Layer)
The “V” column controls layer visibility. By clicking the eye icon, you can toggle whether a layer is visible. This is helpful when managing a large number of layers, as hiding unnecessary ones makes drawing easier. Multiple layers can be visible at the same time.L (Locked Layer)
The “L” column locks layers, allowing you to view them but not interact with their elements. This is useful when there are numerous existing lines that might interfere with new drawings due to snapping. Simply click the lock icon to lock a layer.
Renaming a Layer
To rename a layer, double-click its name in the list, type the desired name, and press Enter to confirm.
Customizing Layer Appearance
C (Color)
To change the layer’s color, double-click the color icon next to the layer name, select your desired color, and click OK. The icon’s color will update, making it easy to identify the layer on the surface.W (Line Weight)
To adjust the line weight, double-click the number in the “W” column or use the arrows to increase or decrease the thickness. This helps make lines more or less prominent as needed.
Deleting Layers
To delete a layer:
- Select the layer you want to remove.
- Click the minus (-) button in the top-right corner, above the layer list.
- Confirm your decision by clicking Yes when prompted.
Additional options for deleting layers can be found by clicking the arrow next to the minus button:
- Delete All Layers: Removes all layers at once.
- Delete All Empty Layers: Deletes layers that contain no drawings or data.
In both cases, you’ll be asked to confirm the action before proceeding.
By effectively managing layers, you can categorize elements clearly and enhance your CAD workflow. This is all for this tutorial. Thank you, and see you next time!
