Using the measuring tool in CAD

Welcome to 3Dsurvey tutorials.

In this guide, we’ll explore how to use the Measure Tool found under CAD functions. This tool is essential for measuring 2D distance, 3D distance, height, or slope within your project.

Accessing the Measure Tool

To begin, navigate to the CAD menu in the upper-right selection menu. Next, click the Measure Tool icon, located as the third option in the right-hand menu.

Setting Snap Points

Before using the tool, decide where the endpoints of your measuring line will snap. Snap points are configured using the Snapper Settings on the right. Here are the options:

  • Point: Snaps to any point in the point cloud (ensure the point cloud is active).
  • Endpoint: Snaps to the endpoint of an existing line.
  • Midpoint: Snaps to the midpoint of an existing line.
  • Nearest: Snaps to the nearest point on an existing line.
  • Center: Snaps to the center of an existing circle.
  • Triangle: Snaps to points on the surface of a 3D mesh (ensure the 3D mesh is active).

For precise measurements, activate only the specific snapping options required for your task.

Configuring Tool Settings

Under the Tool Settings (below the Snapper Settings), you can customize:

  • Displayed Measurements: Choose which measurements (e.g., 3D distance, height) will appear on your lines by checking the corresponding boxes.
  • Text Size: Adjust the font size for better readability.

All settings can be modified later if needed.

Drawing and Measuring

Here’s how to draw and measure using the tool:

  1. Activate the desired snap option. For this example, we’ll use Triangle to snap points onto a 3D mesh. Ensure your 3D mesh is active.
  2. Select the desired measurement types (e.g., 3D Distance, Height).
  3. Use the left mouse button to place the endpoints of your measuring line.
  4. If a mistake is made, press Backspace to delete the last endpoint.
  5. When finished, press Escape or right-click to confirm your lines.

Finalizing Your Measurements

Once your lines are drawn, the selected measurements will display automatically. Any incorrect lines can be adjusted or deleted, ensuring your data remains accurate.

That’s all for this tutorial on the Measure Tool in CAD. With its precise snapping options and customizable measurement settings, this tool simplifies data collection and analysis in 3Dsurvey.
